Breeding Season Reproduction Internship

Paid, Full-Time • February 1-June 30, 2027 • Weatherford, Texas

Learn equine reproduction by doing it.

Weatherford Equine’s Breeding Season Reproduction Internship is a paid, full-time working internship for college students and recent graduates interested in developing practical skills in equine reproduction.

Interns become working members of our Breeding Center team—not observers—and take on increasing responsibility as their skills and experience develop. We expect to select two to three interns for the 2027 breeding season.

About the Position

This is a hands-on working internship centered on a high-volume mare reproduction program. Interns assist our veterinarians and year-round staff with the daily reproductive workload while learning how an efficient Breeding Center operates.

Training and responsibilities increase with demonstrated competence. Depending on experience, interns may assist with mare handling and identification, reproductive-examination workflow, artificial insemination, uterine treatments, embryo recovery and transfer, recipient-mare management, semen handling, medications, records and daily facility preparation.

This is not a shadowing position. Horse movement, treatments, cleaning, restocking and other physical work are part of the daily job.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

  • Safely retrieving, identifying and handling mares for reproductive examinations
  • Moving mares efficiently through the daily schedule
  • Assisting veterinarians during palpation and ultrasound examinations
  • Preparing for and assisting with artificial insemination, uterine lavage, reproductive treatments, embryo recovery and transfer
  • Supporting the monitoring and management of recipient mares
  • Assisting with semen handling and preparing supplies and equipment
  • Administering medications and treatments as training and experience allow
  • Monitoring mares housed at the Breeding Center and promptly reporting concerns
  • Assisting with horse arrivals and departures
  • Maintaining accurate horse identification and records
  • Cleaning, restocking and preparing treatment areas and equipment
  • Supporting the team wherever needed during busy days

Who We’re Looking For

Strong candidates will:

  • Have meaningful hands-on horse-handling experience
  • Show up consistently and on time
  • Work hard and learn quickly
  • Take direction and constructive feedback well
  • Pay close attention to detail
  • Work safely and efficiently as part of a team
  • Be willing to perform physical work and spend much of the day on their feet
  • Look for the next task rather than waiting to be assigned one

Current college students and recent graduates in equine science, animal science, pre-veterinary or related programs are encouraged to apply. Applicants in other programs may also be considered if they have strong horse experience.

Previous veterinary, breeding-farm or equine reproduction experience is helpful but not required. Applicants must be able to safely catch, lead and handle a variety of horses.

Schedule

The 2027 internship runs from February 1 through June 30 and is a full-time, hourly position.

Breeding-season workload varies from day to day. Interns should be prepared for early mornings—occasionally beginning as early as 6:00 a.m.—long days, significant overtime and work on most weekends during peak season.

Applicants able to commit to the full internship period will receive priority. Students seeking academic credit should include their school’s internship or capstone requirements with their application.

Compensation, Housing & Future Opportunities

Interns are paid $15 per hour. Hours worked over 40 in a workweek are paid at time-and-a-half. Significant overtime should be expected during the busiest portions of breeding season, although weekly hours will vary with the workload.

Limited housing may be available but is not guaranteed. Applicants should indicate on the application whether housing would be needed to accept the position.

Strong interns may be considered for future seasonal or full-time opportunities as positions become available.
