Full-Time • Year-Round • Weatherford, Texas

Weatherford Equine Medical Center is looking for dependable, motivated individuals to join our Medical Center team as Equine Veterinary Technicians/Assistants.

Our technicians are involved in nearly every aspect of the hospital’s daily operation. We ultimately want each team member to become capable of handling a broad range of responsibilities, but we recognize those skills develop over time. Previous equine veterinary experience is valuable, but strong horsemanship, dependability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are equally important.

About the Position

A typical day begins around 7:30 a.m. with the team completing morning treatments on hospitalized patients.

After treatments, technicians transition into the day’s workflow, which may include assisting veterinarians with appointments, helping with hospitalized patients and procedures, lameness examinations, diagnostic imaging, surgery, laboratory testing, equipment care, restocking, and general hospital responsibilities.

At the end of the day, available team members work together to complete evening treatments and make sure examination and treatment areas are clean, stocked, and ready for the following morning.

This is a hands-on position where responsibility increases as knowledge, confidence, and proficiency develop.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

  • Performing physical examinations and monitoring hospitalized patients
  • Recognizing abnormalities and communicating concerns to veterinarians
  • Administering oral, IV, and IM medications
  • Following treatment plans, feeding instructions, and wound-care protocols
  • Setting up and maintaining IV fluids
  • Assisting veterinarians and interns with patient procedures
  • Handling and jogging horses for lameness examinations
  • Preparing injection sites and assisting with joint injections
  • Assisting with radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Preparing equipment and assisting with surgical procedures
  • Wrapping instrument packs and operating the autoclave
  • Running in-house CBC, chemistry, lactate, and Fluxergy testing
  • Preparing and packaging samples for outside laboratories
  • Cleaning and maintaining diagnostic and procedural equipment
  • Restocking treatment carts, examination areas, and supplies
  • Helping maintain a clean, organized, and efficient hospital

There is rarely a shortage of things that need to be done. We value employees who learn to recognize the next task rather than waiting to be assigned one.

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is:

  • Comfortable and experienced handling horses
  • Dependable and consistently on time
  • Observant and attentive to detail
  • Comfortable working with sick, injured, and sometimes difficult horses
  • Physically capable of handling and jogging horses
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
  • Willing to learn new technical skills
  • Comfortable asking questions when unsure
  • Able to work efficiently as part of a team
  • Willing to perform both technical veterinary work and routine cleaning, restocking, and patient-care duties
  • Interested in continually improving their veterinary knowledge and abilities

Previous equine veterinary experience is preferred but not required for every candidate.

Credentialed veterinary technicians are welcome, but credentialing is not required. Experienced horsepeople with the right aptitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn may also be considered.

Training & Growth

We do not expect every new employee to arrive proficient in every aspect of the position.

Someone with less veterinary experience may begin with horse handling, patient care, cleaning, restocking, and assisting experienced team members while gradually developing additional technical skills.

Our goal is to develop versatile technicians who can eventually move comfortably between hospitalized patient care, appointments, lameness examinations, diagnostic imaging, laboratory work, surgery, procedures, and general hospital responsibilities.

Join the Medical Center Team

Strong technicians are an essential part of Weatherford Equine Medical Center. Our veterinarians depend on them to provide excellent patient care, assist with procedures, recognize problems, maintain equipment and work areas, and help keep a busy equine hospital running efficiently.

For someone who enjoys horses, veterinary medicine, and developing new skills, this position offers the opportunity to become an important and trusted member of the Weatherford Equine team.
