EQUINE VETERINARY INTERNSHIP
One-year clinical internship for graduating and recently graduated veterinarians.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Weatherford Equine offers 4–5 equine internship positions each year. Our goal is to provide new veterinarians with broad exposure to a busy equine referral and primary-care practice while steadily increasing responsibility, confidence, and clinical independence throughout the year.
Interns rotate through hospital medicine, surgery and sports medicine, outpatient services, anesthesia and diagnostic imaging, and emergency/overnight care. This service-based structure provides focused learning while maintaining continuity with hospitalized and outpatient cases.
Term: June 1 – May 31
Salary: $66,000 plus housing, utilities and additional benefits

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Weatherford Equine is a 100% equine practice providing referral and primary care through our Medical Center, Breeding Center, and ambulatory services. Interns are exposed to a diverse caseload encompassing sports medicine and lameness, surgery, internal medicine, reproduction, emergency and critical care, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, dentistry, and general equine practice.
The Medical Center includes multiple examination and treatment areas, a surgical suite, ICU and isolation facilities, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, an in-house pharmacy and laboratory, and dedicated inpatient care. Interns also gain significant reproductive experience through our Breeding Center, including mare and stallion management, embryo transfer, recipient mare programs, and oocyte aspiration.
The hospital serves a large western performance horse population while also receiving referral cases from throughout North Texas and the surrounding region. Interns work alongside experienced equine veterinarians, including board-certified specialists in surgery and internal medicine.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE & EXPECTATIONS
The internship is designed to progress from closely supervised clinical work toward greater independence as each intern’s experience, judgment, and confidence develop. Veterinarians remain available for consultation and support while interns take increasing responsibility for case management, emergency care, treatments, diagnostics, and communication with clients and referring veterinarians.
Interns participate in daytime services as well as emergency and overnight care. The position is intended to provide meaningful hands-on experience rather than limiting interns to technical duties such as anesthesia or radiography.
Applicants should be prepared for the schedule and workload of a busy equine internship and must meet the requirements for veterinary licensure in Texas by the start of employment. The internship is a one-year commitment.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Weatherford Equine provides a competitive compensation package designed to reduce many of the living expenses traditionally associated with an equine internship.
Annual salary: $66,000
Housing: Provided, including utilities
Professional support: AAEP and AVMA membership, professional liability coverage, and applicable veterinary licensing expenses
Paid time off: One week paid vacation
Intern housing is provided at or near our facilities, allowing convenient access to the hospital and reducing out-of-pocket living expenses during the internship year.
VETERINARY STUDENT EXTERNSHIPS
Short-term clinical experiences for currently enrolled veterinary students.
Weatherford Equine welcomes veterinary students for year-round externships. Externship opportunities may also be found through the AAEP Internship Hub. Externs are encouraged to spend time with multiple services and veterinarians, allowing exposure to hospital medicine, surgery, sports medicine, reproduction, ambulatory practice, emergency cases, and other areas of individual interest.
Priority is generally given to fourth-year veterinary students, although students at other stages of training are welcome as scheduling permits. International veterinary students are also considered. Two- to four-week externships are preferred, although shorter or longer visits may be accommodated.
Housing is available in our extern quarters, with linens, kitchen access, washer/dryer, internet, and other basic amenities provided. Externs should expect to participate actively in the daily schedule and are encouraged to become involved in cases rather than simply observe.
